Have you tried to implement a mod in Minecraft? All the research on how to do it, if mod version x.xx is compatible for your current Minecraft version and a lot more. Thanks to the FTB launcher, which is short for Feed the Beast Launcher, that is ancient history.
FTB launcher is an program designed to play modpacks without any configuring. With just a couple of clicks you can start an available modpack and the launcher will download en configure everything for you. It has the ability to download maps, texturepacks, different mod packs and more.
The official site can be found here: http://www.feed-the-beast.com
Because there is a lot to talk about this article will be split into two parts. The first will cover the following topics of the launcher:
- News;
- Options;
- Maps;
- Texturepacks.
The second part will contain the most important feature of the launcher, which is the Modpack section. The modpack section will be divided into the following topics:
- Modpacks
- Filter settings;
- Edit modpacks;
- Versions;
- Account;
- Different modpacks.
You can find part two here.
News
This section is pretty self-explanatory. The Feed the Beast team keeps you updated on the launcher. From development news to updates of modpacks. Take a look at the screenshot below to see how it looks.
Options
In the options tab there are quite some things to do. First of is the install folder. In this folder the launcher will put all of the files. This includes vanilla Minecraft, modpacks, texturepacks, log files and more. See the picture below for the tab itself:
The log files will be placed in the root of the folder you specified. And for every modpack you play it will create a folder in which everything will be placed. Each with their own Minecraft version and files. Lets say we have two modpacks. Modpack A and Modpack B. The launcher will create two folders, namely Modpack A and Modpack B. Each of those folders will have vanilla Minecraft downloaded, their own texturepacks, mods, map and Minecraft settings.
This means that each modpack will work independently from each other. Have their own folder and keeps things nice and separated.
You can also force update the game. Below that you can specify the amount of ram is allocated to Minecraft. Higher is in general better. In advanced options you can specify a download location. Select the server closest to you location. Also the window size and a couple of other settings.
Maps
The maps section contains maps that other uses have made and are allowed to be published in the FTB launcher. There are not a lot of maps available for download. (On 26 march 2013) Most maps currently available are uploaded by a Minecraft player called Direwolf20. He has a YouTube series and every 10 episode he releases a new map for everyone to download. There is also one for the FTB Pax 2013 Minecraft challenge.
If you want to play a map you need to first choose a compatible modpack. It will only show compatible mod packs. Then simply hit install in the bottom right corner and let the launcher do the rest for you. No need to worry about copying and pasting files in a certain directory. The launcher takes care of everything for you.
Texturepacks
The title says it all. In here you can pick an texture pack and install it. As of writing this article there are three available texturepacks to choose from. Namely: Soartex Fanver, Familiair yet Different and Love And Tolerance. You can click on each texture pack and read more information about it in the right panel.
In order to use the texture pack you first need to select an modpack in the dropdown list. Then hit install and sit back. Same goes with the maps the launcher takes care of everything. The only thing you need to do is in Minecraft select the texture pack and you will be mining and building with your new textures.
And that is it for this part. In the part two I will talk about the modpacks and everything that comes with it. See you then.
